Optima - The Low Vision Experts
Optima Low Vision Services Ltd - expert advice and products

Optima Low Vision Services Ltd is the premier distributor of low-vision aids in the UK. We supply a large and comprehensive range of quality and value for money optical and electronic magnifiers - including sophisticated BiOptic Telescopes. We also carry the largest range of Anti-Glare Filters in Europe, and an increasing range of LED and Fluorescent task lamps with a choice of light colour temperatures. We supply the majority of low-vision clinics, specialist optometrists, voluntary organisations for people with a visual impairment, Social Services Departments, and Education and Employment Services.

Optima Low Vision Services are not only a wholesaler and retailer of aids for people with a visual impairment; we are also the NHS contractor providing direct low vision services to thousands of people each year within a large area of the South West of England. This places us in a unique position to understand directly the needs of our customers.

Optima Low Vision Services was launched in 1994 by John Collins BA Dip. Soc. Wk. CQSW. John, who has been visually impaired from birth, has been involved in the low vision field for the past 35 years and has been a speaker at many national and international conferences since the 1980's. Nicholas Collins, Optima's Low Vision Service Manager, was one of the first people in the UK to qualify as a Certified Low Vision Therapist (CLVT), which is an American qualification. John, Nicholas and the dedicated team at Optima are passionate about the continuing improvements to low vision services and offer accredited training courses for professionals or volunteers, which are specifically designed to improve the quality of low vision care.

Optima are now part of an International Consortium dedicated to improving the quality, design and cost effectiveness of low vision aids. The consortium includes members from the USA, New Zealand, Mainland Europe, South Africa and Asia. Our combined buying power allows us to influence innovation and design, and enables us to purchase at extremely attractive prices. In the past 4 months alone we have made significant improvements to product design, introduced new power ranges to our LED magnifier range and will soon be offering 4 colour temperature choices for these products. New products will be introduced on a regular basis throughout the remainder of 2013. Our ability to 'market test' new and improved products within our own low vision clinics places us in a unique position to influence and guide progressive manufacturers.

In addition to providing advice and guidance to equipment designers and manufacturers, Optima Low Vision Services are able to offer a comprehensive Information, Advice and Training Service through our professionally qualified and experienced staff team. In 2006 John Collins, Managing Director of Optima Low Vision Services designed the training course 'Train the Trainers' for the Macular Society. In 2008 this project won the 'Big Lottery' National Award for the best initiative in the Health and Social Care category. We believe Optima can truly be called the low-vision experts.
