PRIVATE LOW VISION ASSESSMENT

What is a Low Vision Assessment?

The purpose of a Low Vision assessment is to work out the best way of improving the vision of someone whose sight cannot be improved with ordinary spectacles or medical treatment.

This is often achieved with the use of magnifying devices of some sort or improved lighting arrangements or by reducing the effects of glare.  Other techniques of coping with poor sight may also be suggested.

What should I do when I arrive?

Your driver should park in the allocated space outside the entrance. The Clinic is on the ground floor and there are no steps within the Clinic. Ring the doorbell and a member of the Vision Team will meet you.

Disabled facilities are available.

What happens during my visit?

You will be assessed by a Low Vision Therapist. He/she will assess your vision and discuss the implications of your poor sight with you. The therapist will assess your vision and suggest ways to improve your ability to read, write and undertake other activities which you may be having difficulties with.

We can also put you in touch with other services, which cater for people with poor sight.

The Low Vision Therapist will be very happy to monitor your progress and discuss any problems that you may encounter.  This “follow up” service may be undertaken by telephone or you may prefer to return and discuss your progress in person.

You will have the opportunity to try a wide range of magnifiying devices – from simple hand held  or spectacle mounted magnifiers to electronic magnifiers ranging from a 3 to 12 inch screen.  We will also demonstrate good task lighting.  We will show you the best way to use magnifying aids, as well as special techniques to help you see more clearly.  You may be asked to practice some Vision Training exercises at home.
