Hand held magnifiers with a built-in battery operated light have the advantage of providing a useful light source for those darker areas of the home or in shops. Those illuminated with an LED (Light Emitting Diode) give a brighter illumination than tungsten bulbs.  The batteries last for up to 80 hours. The LED itself can last up to 10,000 hours.

The disadvantages of hand held illuminated magnifiers is that they are bulkier than conventional hand magnifiers. A very useful stand can turn these magnifiers into a hands free version.
